The N3N is the best known
product of the Naval Aircraft
Factory. Construction of the
prototype N3N-1 was completed
in 1936 and was designed to
replace those trainers built in
the 1920’s. Between 1941 and 1945 the Navy trained nearly 65,000 pilots. The
majority of those were trained in the N3N-3 and had nicknamed the aircraft the
“Yellow Peril”, primarily because of its bright yellow paint scheme and its
a tendency to “ground loop” if mishandled on landing.
